Building audit at the Belgian Senate

During the past months MCS finished a very unique project in the Belgian Senate. A thorough building audit allowed us to present a proposal that provides an optimal and sustainable working environment and an improved infrastructure.

The audit in particular had following aims: simplifying circulation, readability and signaling, creating an inspiring and efficient reception infrastructure, optimizing the meeting room concept, analyzing the current office concepts, improving the interaction between departments en optimizing the security and safety concept.

The entire building has been mapped with the module myMCS Space Management. This enabled us to give a visual and numerical overview of the current building ratio and the area per space type.

One of the most important elements of the building audit consisted of making a solid and professional reception infrastructure. The reception is the first impression of a building and therefore contributes to a large extent to the perception of "brand name".

MCS has developed a proposal for improving the reception infrastructure. This is achieved by on the one hand moving the entrance hall to a more central part and on the other hand by incorporating several rooms in the reception role. The entrance hall part will be at the centre. The circulation and readability are strongly improved by creating two new “basis axes” throughout all floors.

The proposal provides in an increase of the total useful area with approximately 400m² as a result of the optimization and re-destination of several rooms. The office volume would increase by 10%, ensuring an additional capacity of 25 to 50 workplaces.

Also a security concept was developed, that comprises public and semi-public meeting areas and non-public areas. These take into account optimum evacuation facilities.

This project was presented to the Secretary-General, the Director-General and the Directors of the Senate. They found it very advanced and especially the 'total concept' was appreciated.
